Spacecamp
Alibi
Spacecamp formed in 2008 when front man Jon Wiley, bassist Steven Mertens, and drummer Chris Egan penned “Red Finger,” an in-your-face, up-tempo protest of the rigged elections in Robert Mugabe’s Zimbabwe.
The band met when chance brought Wiley, Mertens, and Egan together as the touring band for anti-folk hero Adam Green on his 2008 summer tour. Backing Green was just the most recent gig for the road-seasoned warriors, who independently had toured with Moldy Peaches, Say Hi To Your Mom, and The Honorary Title before crossing paths on Green’s tour where they laid the foundations of a brand of pop-influenced indie rock that they can proudly call their own.
Green’s 2008 tour was a productive summer for Spacecamp. In addition to writing a number of songs that would later become crowd favorites, opportunity knocked at their door; while in Berlin, the guys met the British musician Dev Hynes, better known as Lightspeed Champion/Blood Orange, who asked Spacecamp to record nearly every song of his second album.
Back in the States, Spacecamp and Hynes recorded Life is Sweet! Nice to Meet You in January of 2009 at Brooklyn’s Mission Sound with producer Ben Allen. During Lightspeed Champion’s recording session, Spacecamp snuck in some recording of their own, tracking “Miko D.T.B.,” mixed by Doug Boehm, and “Teen Idol,” mixed by Ben Allen, two songs that appear on the band’s 5-song EP, Alibi.
2010 was a busy year for Spacecamp. While touring as the backup band for both Adam Green and Lightspeed Champion, the guys landed roles in Green’s screwball tragedy The Wrong Ferrari. Filmed entirely on iPhone, The Wrong Ferrari features such notables as Macaulay Culkin, Devendra Banhart and musician Jack Dishel. The movie was released online to great success.
Later in 2010, Spacecamp invited guitarist James Pollis, formerly of Brooklyn’s Your Nature, to join the band. With the lineup rounded out, Spacecamp spent the rest of 2010 and the beginning of 2011 playing shows and writing their first full-length album that is scheduled for release in Fall 2012.
“We recorded the Alibi EP amidst rain and cold weather, huddled in a basement studio in Dumbo, Brooklyn called Saltlands, owned by Nick Stumpf, formerly of The French Kicks. We recorded the basic tracks in 2 days while sipping green tea and wondering where the couch was. They say that hardship lends itself to making good music but you be the judge,” says bassist, Steven Mertens.
Spacecamp is looking forward to the release of Alibi, a psyched-out get-your-feet moving EP. Alibi is due out on Modern Records on November 22.
