CFCF Announces New Exercises Mini-LP with Paper Bag Records
“Dabbling in various beats — everything from nu-disco to Balearic house to ambient — minor-key melodies soar and cruise throughout. Think of this as the soundtrack to Crockett and Tubbs
brooding after hours.” - NYLON
“Silver can evoke bittersweet memories of a bygone era without resorting to pastiche.” – Pitchfork

Montreal-based DJ and electronic artist CFCF has announced the release of his new mini-LP, Exercises via Paper Bag Records on April 24th. Exercises shows a different side of CFCF’s ever expanding palette with a series of subdued piano and synth based pieces. Pulling from influences like Philip Glass, Ryuichi Sakamoto and David Borden among others, and using institutional architecture and 70′s Canadiana as a framework. Download the first single ‘Exercise #3 (Building)‘ at SoundCloud. Exercises has a distinctly 20th century feel. Opener “1 (Entry)” lures us in with a melancholy bed of synths, while standout “3 (Building)“‘s rolling piano melodies build to a cathartic crescendo. The lone vocal piece, “5 (September),” is a cover of the opener to David Sylvian‘s Secrets of the Beehive album, refitted with 2-step percussion and wintry pads. This is a change of pace for CFCF to be sure, but no less cinematic and evocative than his 2009 debut Continent, an impressive collage of vintage electronic textures evoking grandiose landscapes worthy of a Michael Mann film. Each track feels like an exploration of lost memories, studies in nostalgia, exercises in spatial remembrance. Excercises follows a series of evolving mixtapes Silver has released. Do U Like Nightbus? explores the titular “genre” through his remixes of Aaliyah, Ciara and Twin Peaks, while Reincarnationpresents a dark mindmeld of exotic chants, pounding drums, R&B crooners and menacing dancefloors. As with his own music, you get the feeling you are embarking on a fantastic journey to an unknown destination.

CFCF EXPLORES A NEW CONTINENT WITH PAPER BAG RECORDS, TEAMS UP WITH SALLY SHAPIRO
FIRST CFCF TRACK “MONOLITH,” AVAILABLE FOR FREE DOWNLOAD
Montreal-based DJ and electronic artist CFCF (aka Michael Silver) is preparing for the release of his first full-length debut album, Continent, on Paper Bag Records. The twelve-track album is the followup to his celebrated Panesian Nights EP, and will be released on October 27th. As CFCF works his way towards Continent, he will first release, The Explorers EP, featuring label mate Sally Shapiro on October 6th. The songs that make up Continent were created at Silver’s home studio between the fall of 2008 and this summer with no hard deadlines for their completion. This gave Silver the opportunity to allow his ever-changing listening habits and influences reflect in the songs. The end result is an album that shifts effortlessly between several styles and sounds while fitting together as a diverse but cohesive package. There is common theme running through Continent’s songs even if it is not easy to pinpoint or describe. The Montreal native has been creating tracks since his pre-teens and has only begun to present his music publicly in the last couple of years. CFCF’s career began to take off with his contest winning remix of Crystal Castles ”Air War” and has followed up with a chain reaction of official remixes for talents such as Sally Shapiro, The Presets, HEALTH, The Teenagers and Hearts Revolution among man y others. “For the songs on this album I usually started with an idea in mind of a specific atmosphere I wanted to convey,” says Silver. “That atmosphere, whether it was something hazy, nostalgic, otherworldly or unsettling, was always the first thing to come to a track. The songs range from mid-tempo nu-disco to balearic, house to ambient. Often the basis of the atmosphere was culled from films by Werner Herzog, Michael Mann, David Lynch, and David Cronenberg as well as countless musical influences includingArthur Russell, Saint Etienne, and Tangerine Dream.” The Fader Magazine said in a recent interview, “Like many people his age, Silver obsesses over childhood ephemera. But rather than sate his yearnings with late night eBay binges on Ghostbusters memorabilia, he resurrects ’80s keys and synths, modifying them into a hybrid of sturdy structure mixed with vintage minor chord melody. “There’s definitely a feeling I try to capture,’ [Silver] says. ‘This feeling of the last day of school, or it could be a decade I didn’t even live in. It doesn’t have to be specific to me.’
