Hellbound Glory

Ken Weinstein

The self-proclaimed “King of Scumbag Country,” Leroy Virgil founded Hellbound Glory upon arriving in his adopted home of Reno, NV, taking inspiration from the Biggest Little City in the World’s bright lights and dive bars, its hard-living denizens and notorious nightlife. The band quickly drew attention for Virgil’s powerhouse character studies and equally potent blend of underground country, bar band rock ‘n’ roll, swamp blues, and classic Americana, manifested on high-profile tours alongside Leon Russell, ZZ Top, and Kid Rock, as well as a string of acclaimed LPs including 2008’s breakthrough debut, SCUMBAG COUNTRY, and 2010’s OLD HIGHS AND NEW LOWS, recently named among Saving Country Music’s top 5 “Greatest Country Albums of the Decade (2010-2019).”

PINBALL – which marked Virgil’s full-length return after a six year absence – was immediately hailed by Rolling Stone Country as “a mix of scuzzy rock & roll riffing, screeching fiddle and an outlaw streak that goes hand-in-hand with a childhood spent in Aberdeen, Washington, the hometown of Kurt Cobain…The songs on PINBALL are unruly, peopled by characters on crime sprees, gun lovers and those with an affinity for lots of drugs and alcohol.” “PINBALL is a continuation of the band’s rowdy prior efforts,” wrote American Songwriter, “with a clear evolution both sonically and lyrically. Tracks like ‘Empty Bottles’ show a more vulnerable side of Hellbound Glory and make for a nuanced listening experience.”
