Lewis was born and raised in Minnesota where his musical idol, Bob Dylan, came from. Picking up a guitar when he was thirteen, Lewis studied the legends that came before him; from Dylan to Zappa, Prince to Sinatra, he immediately became entranced by the power of music. Lewis moved to Colorado in 2008 to pursue a career in live electronic music. Producing for hip-hop acts such as Lizzo (Atlantic Records) and having success playing shows at most notably Red Rocks Amphitheater and Denver’s City Hall Amphitheater, Lewis felt estranged from his Folk-Rock roots. In turn, he moved to New York City to chase his dream of accomplishing a simple task – writing songs on his acoustic guitar.
On his second full-length album, “In Cars Passing”, Johnny tapped acclaimed producer and engineer, John Agnello (Kurt Vile, Dinosaur Jr., Phosphorescent), to record a new batch of completely original material; heavy in emotion and lyrical substance. Lewis rallied an elite band of NYC’s finest players and together with Agnello, achieved the almost impossible – a near-live record, bigger than life.
Johnny V. Lewis is now twenty-six and living in New York City where he continues to push the limits of what it means to be a modern day songwriter.
