September 25, 2019 – Los Angeles-based pop duo mai.la share the new single “maybe“, a surging anthem of sisterhood and synchronicity, from their upcoming EP Blush, out October 23 on Foreign Family Collective.
The song has a frenetic energy about it that captures the wild connection of band members Cait and Katie, who explain, “We’ve been attached at the hip for an eternity, cut from the same mold. We wrote this song for us, and people like us, that have someone in their life that’s the same type of psycho as them. They’ll drive you crazy, and you let them take the wheel.”
For the “maybe” video, mai.la took to the streets of Los Angeles’ underbelly for an adventure in and out of thrift store jungles and crazy costume shops, before ending up somewhere tucked far away from the city lights to craft their own masked disguises. All the while mai.laare the only ones to be seen, in their own world together, creating something new and almost supernatural, much like their music.
The forthcoming EP Blush builds on their southern roots, and explores their adventure thus far as artists.
“Blush is our time capsule. We made each of these tracks at such a specific time of our lives. There is no doubt that in 30 years, were going to listen to this EP and be transported to Tennessee roads and cicada songs. We’re going to remember the laughter, and the tears, the stress and the hugs. We’re going to remember 12 hour jam sessions and staying up until the sun rises, sleeping until 3pm, then doing it again. We weren’t thinking about putting it out, or where we’d be when we did, or how we’d feel about these songs. We weren’t thinking at all. It manifested, and now it’s here, and we will always be grateful for that. We hope that by listening, you get to see a little peek of that too.”
Originally formed in Dayton, OH and developed in Nashville, TN, mai.la‘s influences come from far and wide. Starting out, the two formed a creative bond over their shared love of Jazz, UK Garage, and electronic music, then evolved their sound out west with producers Aaron Harmon and Jordan Reyes (Blackbear, Terror Jr, Basecamp). In 2016, they hit instant viral success with “Ready”, their debut song, and joined Foreign Family Collective in 2018 for the release of “Crash”. They were approached for the collective by Harrison from ODESZA who had heard them on Soundcloud. “He (and the whole FFC team) offered to help us in any way they could,” said mai.la. “The excitement in their voices about a group of songs we hadn’t shown anyone, but had been working on for a long time, was proof enough that they truly love and connect with the music they consume. We respect everything they’re about, it’s rare to find real people out there.”
mai.la‘s constant innovation and reinvention of their sound sets them apart from the rest and brings a new approach to familiar genres. In an interview, they told Nest HQ, “To us, our music isn’t just about a good jam, it’s about art and emulation. We want you to feel where we are. We want you to exist in our world.”
