Biography

Oysterhead, spawned in May of 2000, at the Saenger Theatre during the New Orleans Jazz Festival began as a SuperJam. Consisting of Trey, Primus bassist Les Claypool and Police drummer Stewart Copeland, the trio performed a set of new original material as well as a number of cover songs including Primus’ “Jerry Was a Racecar Driver”(with lyrics from Phish’s Reba), Led Zeppelin’s “Immigrant Song” and the Kinks’ “All Day and All of the Night.” Recalling the chemistry from that one-off gig, Trey invited Stewart and Les to the Barn in April 2001 to record what would become “The Grand Pecking Order.” A tour of small arenas ensued in the fall, including appearances on The Late Show With Conan O’Brien and HBO’s hour-long concert program “Reverb.” Heralded as a Supergroup by many critics, more than anything this project was an exercise in collaboration, essentially combining three band leaders with very different musical backgrounds.
