The Brummies, a rock trio based in Nashville, share the new song “Hillside,” as featured in the trailer for Dads, a film-festival favorite and actress Bryce Dallas Howard’s directorial debut. The upbeat, piano-driven song is the first new music from The Brummies since last summer’s “Alone With You.” The band made their debut in 2018 with the full-length album Eternal Reach, which received high praise from critics and featured Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter Kacey Musgraves on the song “Drive Away.”
“Hillside” is a special track for the bandmates, who wrote it after an inspiring trip together to Joshua Tree, California. There they had an incredible bonding experience that brought on a newfound appreciation for life. Singer and multi-instrumentalist John Davidson reflects, “The lyric for ‘Hillside’ was truthfully started by reflecting on a mind-bending trip that we all experienced.” The tune radiates this positive energy, complete with a pounding entry on the keys, met with a rhythmic clap that could bring even the hardest of hearts to their feet. The chorus basks in astonishment at the beauty of the world, before echoing the affirmation “I’m ready.”
Oh what a time to be living in To be living in Oh what a time to be I’m ready
“It is a song about wonder,” continues Davidson. “It’s still hard to wrap my mind around life, space, and the endless possibilities that go with the unknown. ‘Oh what a time to be living in’ can be said for any generation because anywhere you look on this earth and beyond is full of magic.”
Indeed a song for the generations, much like what Howard aims to do with Dads, a film that weaves together different stories about a variety of father-child relationships, “Hillside” is a song for all ages. In fact, Davidson explains, “when I sat down at the piano in LA where we wrote the song and started singing the ‘Oh’ in the chorus, I was channeling an Arcade Fire feeling of childhood.”
Esteemed Los Angeles-based industry player Jeremy Silver, co-wrote and co-produced “Hillside” with The Brummies, adding his own flavor to the mix, and offering a very special key component. “We wrote and recorded Hillside in my one bedroom apt in LA. The guys gravitated towards this 100 year old piano I have (graciously given to me by friends at Hotel Cafe). I could feel the energy and excitement in the room coming from the band and I just tried to capture it in its purest form. I think that comes through on the record.” The Brummies are composed of John Davidson, Jacob Bryant, and Trevor Davis. Known for their fresh blend of urgent rock & roll, dreamy indie-folk, and piercing songwriting, the band has a timeless sound crafted by three players in possession of an almost telekinetic musical shorthand. “Hillside” is currently available on all platforms, with a brand new music video out today. Be sure to also catch the song in the Dads trailer. In addition to “Hillside,” The Brummies are set to release more new music this summer.

JULY 10, 2020 (NASHVILLE, TN) — The Brummies, Nashville-based rock trio, offer a ray of sunlight and a dose of positivity with their latest single “Sunshine.” It is the first single from their forthcoming album due out later this year. The vibrant new song began with a moment of waking sunlight through cheap broken window-blinds. Ultimately though, the inspiration that completed the song was due to the late Bill Withers. The Brummies bandmate Trevor explains, “We were messing with the groove of this one for a while and were having trouble finding the right one when someone said loudly ‘Bill Withers Vibe’ and then it clicked and we knew exactly what it needed.” In addition, he hopes that, “during hard times people can turn this one on and it gives them some light or up bringing in some sort of way.” Of the songwriting process, John says “On this particular day Jacob told us he wanted to write a song about a ray of sunshine that woke him up that morning from some broken blinds by his bed. I believe I had a classical guitar in my hand and started playing the basic first two chords of the song. The melody and lyrics naturally fell out for this one pretty quickly. Co-writer Joe Hertler went into his world and came out with pretty much the whole bridge, or section before the instrumental. As we got closer to production for recording, Bill Withers was sort of a beacon for us in terms of groove. He definitely inspired the beat to that song.” John offers the analogy that listeners “can apply ‘Sunshine’ to a lot of things that give you life, whether that be a significant other, coffee, weed, you name it.” “Sunshine” is something that everyone needs right now, and although it may not be easily accessible for everyone, there is light in the simplest things, and The Brummies remind us of that. American Songwriter premiered the track earlier this week, saying the song has “hopeful, uplifting lyrics and [an] optimistic musical vibe.” The song follows their recent release, the equally powerful “Hillside,” which was featured in the trailer for Dads, a film-festival favorite and actress Bryce Dallas Howard’s directorial debut. Only two years ago, the band made their debut in 2018 with the full-length album Eternal Reach, which received high praise from critics and featured Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter Kacey Musgraves on the song “Drive Away.” Now they’re back with fresh material and more to come over the summer. “After Midnight” swelters in the heat of a late night dancehall ruled by moonlight and emotions on high. “This is our dark disco song… a great hook up jam,” remarks Jacob. Trevor continues, “It started with me playing this rhythm on keys one night. At first, it was this long rocking jam that went into this dark halftime outro.” “It was particularly fun. I was looking for something that deviated from the main melody in the chorus” John explains of the harmonies. “This song started on a synth, which is the first thing you hear in the song. That was always compelling and it eventually evolved into what is now ‘After Midnight’.” Variance Magazine debuted “After Midnight” this week, calling it “an irresistible listen,” and saying that “it might seem like summer is quickly disappearing (or maybe it feels like it never arrived), but ‘After Midnight’ may just have you thinking twice about that, delivering the perfect escape from these weird times.” Only two years ago, The Brummies made their debut in 2018 with the full-length album Eternal Reach, which received high praise from critics and featured GRAMMY Award-winning singer-songwriter Kacey Musgraves on the song “Drive Away.” The band returned this year with “Hillside,” which was featured in the trailer for Dads, a film-festival favorite directed by Bryce Dallas Howard. SEPTEMBER 15, 2020 (NASHVILLE, TN) — The Brummies offer a little spice and flavor to the work week with the 80s themed, black-lit music video for “After Midnight.” The Nashville-based, Alabama-bred trio rock out in the basement alongside choreographed aerobic dancers and some creatures of the night inspired by the 1989 family fantasy flick “Little Monsters.” The band even enlisted some family members and close friends to jump in on the adventure. “This is our dark disco song,” explains Jacob. Trevor continues, “It started with me playing this rhythm on keys one night. At first, it was this long rocking jam that went into this dark halftime outro.” “It was particularly fun. SEPTEMBER 25, 2020 (NASHVILLE, TN) — The Brummies have made a name for themselves with their southern-bred rock n’ roll, combined with disco grooves and a hint of 80s inspo. Testing new boundaries, today they mix it up with some unconventional methods for their latest single “Fever Dream.”
The Tennessee-based band also announced that a full-length album, titled Automatic World, will be coming out on November 13 via Sandbox Entertainment. Pre-order for the album is available here.
For “Fever Dream,” the Alabama-born bandmates looked to a few household items to create some unexpected sounds. Singer and multi-instrumentalist John Davidson explains, “it’s a sneakily sultry song about desire that we got creative on sonically. The musically ambitious second verse was the first thing we tackled in pre-production for the album. And some of the transitions on this song are unconventional. For example, at the end of the bridge, we used the clicking of a wrench, the zip of a zipper, and a pitched down ‘oh’ vocal simultaneously to create the desired effect.”
Vocalist and multi-tool musician Jacob Bryant continues, “John had this guitar thing going one day on the back porch at my studio in Nashville and I started just singing along and the lyrics to the chorus just came out immediately.”
Percussionist and background vocalist Trevor Davis adds, “The licks and pauses in the 2nd verse was the very first thing we started on when we were in pre-production. It was fun to get all those parts together nice and tight.”
When The Brummies released their debut album Eternal Reach in 2018, they pulled off the rare feat of creating something timeless. Almost three years later, the group continues to defy the elastic boundaries of time on the forthcoming Automatic World. It’s a record built around the theme of déjà vu — but the songs contained therein are like nothing you’ve heard before.
“When we started recording these songs, we were all on the same page, with everyone focused on the grooves that moved us. We locked into that,” says John.
“Déjà vu, futures, past, all of that comes together in this record in a musical way,” shares Jacob. “There are future sounds, but they are mixed with the old. Eternal Reach was all about recording to tape and capturing the vintage vibe. We recorded a lot of this the same way, but we expanded it sonically — there are a lot more synthesizers and production.”
“We all wanted to expand and do different things,” says Trevor, “We didn’t make the same record twice.”
Produced by The Brummies along with Jarrad Kritzstein (Ruston Kelly) and Austin Jenkins (Leon Bridges), Automatic World exists in those atmospheric notes that seem to soundtrack our subconscious. There are rhythmic guitar riffs straight out of the Seventies, hypnotic Moog passages that evoke the electronica of Giorgio Moroder, and even the bright tones of soul music.

NOVEMBER 13, 2020 (NASHVILLE, TN) — The Brummies are the kind of band that have a little something for everyone; they seamlessly blend indie and classic rock, funk and disco for a 360 degree experience that is sure to keep fans dancing at the bar, at their shows, and even at home in the basement these days. Their new album Automatic World arrives today, via Sandbox Entertainment, with a full scope of love, sunshine, fear for tomorrow, and the entire range of emotions. The record explores all things past and present diving into the theme of déjà vu. Automatic World will be available on vinyl Dec 18.
“Déjà vu, futures, past, all of that comes together in this record in a musical way,” shares vocalist and multi-tool musician Jacob Bryant. “There are future sounds, but they are mixed with the old. Eternal Reach [The Brummies’ full-length debut] was all about recording to tape and capturing the vintage vibe. We recorded a lot of this the same way, but we expanded it sonically — there are a lot more synthesizers and production.”
“When we started recording these songs, we were all on the same page, with everyone focused on the grooves that moved us. We locked into that,” says singer and multi-instrumentalist John Davidson.
“We all wanted to expand and do different things,” says percussionist and background vocalist Trevor Davis, “We didn’t make the same record twice.”
Tracks on Automatic World like the ethereal “Fever Dream,” the vibey “After Midnight,” and the searching “Cherry Blossom” resonate with a crisp and effortless freshness, the result of three players in possession of an almost telekinetic musical shorthand. In the studio or in the writing room, The Brummies (who wrote or co-wrote every track on the project) don’t try; they just do.
“Have we been here before?/Because we’re talking without speaking,” they harmonize in the New Wave-y “Been Here Before,” a song whose message sums up the inherent chemistry of the core bandmates.
In “After Midnight,” The Brummies — originally from Birmingham, Alabama, their name is U.K. slang for a resident of Birmingham — revel in what they call “dark disco.”
“Call Me,” a pleading offer of help to a friend, came out of another spontaneous jam session, with the members each picking up a different instrument. Its intro and lyrics call to mind Eternal Reach‘s “Drive Away,” the band’s celebrated collaboration with Kacey Musgraves. “It started off with Jacob on the drums and this piano pad thing,” John recalls. “Each song has a different process in how it evolves, and that one went through many different steps.”
Sometimes inspiration would hit them square in the head. After being awoken every morning by sunlight creeping through a crack in his blinds, Jacob sat down and wrote the funky “Sunshine.” Ebullient, joyful, and full of hope, it owes a debt to late soul singer Bill Withers. “He definitely inspired the beat to that song,” John says.
Still other sounds on the project appeared as happy accidents. While Jacob was working on the harmony-rich relationship tune “Tomorrow,” his guitar amp failed and began to emit a single droning note. He loved it and incorporated it into the track. “It’s a sad song that we made into a love song,” he says.
Atwood Magazine said of the album “The sheer scope of their creative visions for ‘Automatic World’ come through when listening to the record, which truly feels as if you’re listening to something purely brand new and undiluted, regardless of whether it’s the first listen or the tenth listen.”
