Brighton-based quartet The Magic Gang blend the widescreen pop symphonies of The Beach Boys with Weezer’s knack for melding distorted guitars with strident pop hooks, strident vocal harmonies which recall Teenage Fanclub, and Mac DeMarco’s forward-thinking creativity.
Within the space of just three releases on their own Telharmonium label, The Magic Gang are already being tipped as a band set for greater things. Despite still being an underground proposition, they recently sold-out their headline show at London’s 800 capacity Scala.
Much of the band’s reputation has been established with memorable shows as support to the likes of Wolf Alice, Hinds, Swim Deep and Spring King. Their summer festival dates encompassed sets at Reading, Leeds, Latitude, Truck and Roundhouse Rising. They also played the opening night of Yala! Records’ club night, which is a new venture from The Maccabees’ guitarist Felix White.
Dork’s review of their set at the Reading Festival stated, “If any festival moment shows a band moving from promising upstarts to genuine threats, this could well be it.” DIY agreed and concluded, “Anything looks possible from here for the Brighton lot.”
The Magic Gang are Angus (bass), Jack (vocals/guitar), Kris (vocals/guitar) and Paeris (drums).

Collectively the album presents a twelve-track snapshot of everything that The Magic Gang are about. The buoyant bangers that have been mainstays of their raucous live shows are represented by the likes of ‘Jasmine’, ‘All This Way’ and ‘All That I Want Is You’. The latter song was inspired by tales from Brian Wilson’s controversial autobiography ‘Wouldn’t It Be Nice’, especially in regards to his reclusive years following the peak of The Beach Boys’ success.
The album also includes the recent singles ‘Alright’, ‘Your Love’ and ‘How Can I Compete’ alongside moodier, piano-orientated, harmony-rich material such as ‘Take Care’ and bittersweet, singer-songwriter vibes on ‘I’ll Show You’.
The majority of the album was produced by Jolyon Thomas (Royal Blood, Slaves), while James Dring (Loyle Carner, Jamie T) and former Maccabees guitarist Hugo White both produced a track each. Every song was written by the band – Paeris Giles (drums), Jack Kaye (guitar/vocals), Kris Smith (vocals/guitar) and Angus Taylor (bass).
The album will be releasing on formats including CD, vinyl and a digital Deluxe Edition that adds four bonus tracks.
