THIRD MAN RECORDS ANNOUNCES TRIO OF RELEASES
FROM NASHVILLE BANDS ON JULY 29th
COUPLER BLUE ROOM SESSIONS
In October of 2015 we invited Nashville purveyors of deliberate ambience, Coupler, to record with a full orchestra of nine friends and musicians, and it turned out to be a very special piece exploring the nether-regions where the organic collides with the electronic. It was 20+ minutes of of captivating and unhurried techno played on both electronic and acoustic instruments that sounded bucolic and propulsive with a deft momentum. However, this wasn’t our typical TMR show. We kept it a relatively intimate affair, with the stage in the center of the room, and only sold a handful of tickets to those interested in seeing a recording process become a performance, making this our first installment in The Blue Room Sessions series.
If you’re new to the magic of Coupler, you can think of them as an “organization” rather than a band. Ryan Norris’ objectives go beyond leading a band – he aims to use Coupler as a vehicle for writing, photography, installation art, film-scoring, etc, and above all this, he aims to collaborate with the creative people around him that inspire him. In the case of this particular performance, the organization core live members, Rodrigo Avendaño, Rollum Haas and Norris, plus a group of auxiliary players: Adam Bednarik, Mark Bond, Matt Glassmeyer, Mia Krout and Ben Marcantel. The icing on the cake was Kelli Shay Hix and her light installation. The performance was tackled from an oblique angle, using group improvisation to reinvent the trajectory as they played. The end result? The birth of a new series, and one of our favorite musical creations to which the Blue Room has ever played host. Listen to a clip from “Invention 4 Silenzio” here, and pre-order the 7″ single now: http://thirdmanstore.com/tmr-live/coupler-blue-room-sessions-12-vinyl. Coupler will have a release show on July 29 at The East Room in Nasvhille with direct support from Nasvhille local band Future Daze. …………..
ESSENTIAL TREMORS –
THE VISITOR EP
Essential Tremors is something of an anomaly in a city steeped in twang, bathed in sunshine and besieged with hootenannies. Code Knr, Miller, Read Only Memory, Tan, and Eerie Neighbor make up the group voted most likely to trigger a cold sweat, and we love them for it. In the past year, the band has made the charge away from guitar music with a quiet strategy of sporadic shows of crawly, four-track downer violence. During this metamorphosis, the band cut tracks with former Terrible Two and current Serration Pulse synth-lord and tone-boss Daniel Tomczak, crafting a crisp record that is globally exasperated and groovy against all odds: a nosedive into a cesspool of circuit-bent pollution with all the precision intact, notoriously tense, rife with white-knuckle paranoia and fog. Throw in well-placed pangs of electroclash, swirling synth, waterlogged bass lines, and dark-sided shit, and you have an important reminder that good times are not forever, which we are honored to bring to your turntable. This is music for strays. Do you have a home?
A Side: The Visitor
B Side: Death Perception
Listen to “The Visitor” here, and pre-order the 7″ single now: http://thirdmanstore.com/essential-tremors-the-visitor-ep-7-vinyl. The release show for Essential Tremors is on August 5 at Soft Junk Nashville with support from Spodee Boy, Serration Pulse, and Aquarian Blood. …………..
WILLIAM TYLER –
LIVE AT THIRD MAN RECORDS
Recorded on July 18th, 2014 as the opening set for Peter Walker’s psychedelic guitar experience, William Tyler’s Live at Third Man Records LP was buried for far too long in our backlog of masters. To release it too soon would have been to unleash the secrets of the transcendent and acclaimed new record Modern Country (Merge, 2016) before they had a chance to manifest. To wait any longer would have been torture for us. Originally planned to be a live single, the full, 5-song performance was too truthy, too seamless, and too perfectly whole to be whittled down to two tracks. So, surprise! A live LP is born. For those unfamiliar with William Tyler, his story is Nashville legend… born into a songwriting family, Tyler was tapped by Kurt Wagner to become a member of Lambchop at age 19 (two decades younger than the other members), and quickly became the “architect of the band’s sound.” From there, Tyler went on to back up the Silver Jews, Bonnie “Prince” Billy, Charlie Louvin, and others… all the while writing songs for his configuration of choice: fingerpicking solo guitar. The acoustic simplicity of his first two albums remains in his most recent effort (which he describes as “a love letter to what we’re losing in America. To what we’ve already lost”), and on this live LP, but Tyler is bringing more depth and more experimentation to his compositions of late. “Gone Clear” (known as “Going Clear” at the time of our recording) which appears on both records, is a melting pot of ideas: a drone reminiscent of Hindustani classical music, a central melody that sounds distinctly Appalachian, a devolution into a kaleidoscope of colors and ideas that it’s hard to believe is being produced by a single musician. This layering of textures is Tyler’s trademark, and even more awe-inspiring live. We like to think that with the purposeful lack of smart phones, bars to saddle up to, and, of course, corners, concert-goers in the Blue Room tend to be more in-the-moment than in most performance venues. But it’s a rare artist who can take the already focused atmosphere in the room and quiet every last busy mind – Tyler did just that. This immortalization of the performance in all its transmundane glory will entrance you from first note.

WOLF EYES UNLEASH “T.O.D.D.”
PROVOCATIVE MUSIC VIDEO DIRECTED BY WILL BENEDICT WITH STEFFEN JØRGENSEN
VIDEO TO BE INCLUDED AT 9TH BERLIN BIENNALE FOR CONTEMPRARY AR
YOUTUBE PREMIERE FOLLOWS FIRST (AND LAST) TRIP METAL FEST
I AM A PROBLEM: MIND IN PIECES AVAILABLE NOW FROM THIRD MAN
Third Man recording group Wolf Eyes have unleashed a brilliantly barmy new music video for “T.O.D.D.” featured on the venerable band’s acclaimed 2015 label debut, I AM A PROBLEM: MIND IN PIECES. The video is streaming now at the official Third Man YouTube channel. “T.O.D.D.” is directed by Paris-based artist/filmmaker Will Benedict, in collaboration with Copenhagen-based artist Steffen Jørgensen. The music video – in which an alien discusses issues surrounding assimilation in an extra global context while drawing parallels with Europe’s current migrant crisis with television talk show host Charlie Rose – will be included at the 9th Berlin Biennale for Contemporary Art, curated by New York-based collective DIS and continuing through the summer. Founded two decades ago in Ann Arbor, Wolf Eyes recently headlined the first (and last) Trip Metal Fest, a remarkable Detroit gathering of experimental artists, noise rockers, and sonic improvisers. The three-day event received widespread national coverage, including a major feature in the New York Times. I AM A PROBLEM: MIND IN PIECES was among 2015’s most highly praised recordings, proclaimed by The Quietus as “a must for all fans of fucked-up outsider rock.” The album “contains all the ominous suspense of a classic horror movie,” wrote Pitchfork. “Each track oozes with eerie tones and seat-edge momentum, such that something terrifying seems to always lurk around the corner.” I AM A PROBLEM: MIND IN PIECES”evokes classical Wolf Eyes in ways that count,” noted SPIN in an 8-out-of-10-rated rave, “but under that rich seasoning of clatters, slithers, feedback, and digested vocal malaise writhe songs.” “A gasping, heaving monster,” applauded Stereogum. “Parts of it sound a bit more like rock music than the things this band has made before.” Paste celebrated Wolf Eyes’ “utter disdain for normalcy,” noting that “hooking up with Third Man…might indicate immortality for an ensemble that could have just decided to fleece the noise genre’s fast-decaying corpse.”

SCHARPLING & WURSTER LIVE AT THIRD MAN RECORDS OUT JULY 1
Last May, two of the funniest guys Third Man Records knows decided to stop in the Blue Room while on the road promoting their definitive and comprehensive 16-CD Box Set (yes, you read that right) The Best of The Best Show. What was comprehensive became immediately not so after Tom Scharpling (#31 on Rolling Stone’s Fifty Funniest People List), and Jon Wurster (#51 on said list, plus esteemed indie-rock pioneer, comedy writer, and actor in his own right) recorded an episode of The Best Show here at Third Man Records. But, fear not, completists! As with nearly every event to grace our famous cornerless room, we recorded it, and it’s almost as hilarious on wax as it was in person. Needle to vinyl is the only way to hear this comedy gold, and we’re proud to be the ones to bring an LP of this caliber into existence. Backed by friends-of-Third-Man-and-anyone-with-ears “Willy and the Mason Jars” (William Tyler, Ryan Norris, Jem Cohen, and Jacob Edwards), Scharpling & Wurster not only witty repartee your face off over and over again on this seminal offering, they also sing their asses off, and interview a very special guest. Scharpling & Wurster Live at Third Man Records is officially available next Friday, July 1, but you can pre-order the comedic goodness NOW at thirdmanstore.com.

THIRD MAN RECORDS WILL REVEAL THEIR ATTEMPT TO PLAY
FIRST PHONOGRAPHIC RECORD IN SPACE
IN CELEBRATION OF 7TH ANNIVERSARY
On July 30 , in celebration of their 7 th anniversary, Third Man Records will reveal their attempt to play the first phonographic record in space – a gold-plated 12″ master of Carl Sagan’s “A Glorious Dawn” (a moving arrangement of Sagan’s sagacious words culled from his magnificent Cosmos series, previously pressed and distributed as a 7″ in their first year of operation, 2009). This record marks the label’s 3 MILLIONTH RECORD PRESSED! The vessel tasked with the mission – The ICARUS CRAFT – is a custom-built “space-proof” turntable attached to a high-altitude balloon designed by Kevin Carrico, who has NASA in his blood, and is responsible for assisting in the restoration of many of Third Man’s machines (Third Man Recording Booth) to working order. Kevin and the Third Man team are aided in their endeavor by SATINS* (Students and Teachers in Near Space). To celebrate the occasion, Third Man Records will be hosting (literal) launch parties at both its Cass Corridor and Nashville locations, where the viewing of the mission, as well as live bands, exclusive, commemorative merchandise, and limited edition, 12″ gold vinyl copies of the 3 millionth pressing, “A Glorious Dawn” will be available for purchase, as well as a few other limited, exclusive LP offerings. In Detroit, the ICARUS CRAFT will be on exhibit with its creator Kevin Carrico answering questions, and in Nashville, the gold-plated record will be displayed. Visitors can take Third Man Impossible Project instant-photos with the ICARUS CRAFT, Gold-plated record, or with designer Kevin Carrico, if you ask him nicely. The pre-recorded launch will be shown at both locations AND streamed online (details to follow) however, exclusive records and merchandise will only be available at Third Man’s physical locations. To avoid waiting in line and be a part of the party at Third Man Cass Corridor and in Nashville’s Blue Room, Third Man Records will offer a limited number of the STELLAR TICKET, which grants access to entertainment and guarantees a bag set aside with your name on it containing each exclusive merch item and a copy of the record. STELLAR TICKETS are not yet for sale, and further details will be announced mid-week. Those who opt not to purchase a STELLAR TICKET will still be able to purchase the record and merchandise in each respective storefront (the Carl Sagan Record will not be available until after the screening), but will not be guaranteed accommodation to watch the launch on-site or admission into the launch party. Also in celebration of Third Man’s 7th anniversary, customers both in-store and online will receive 30% off their entire purchase!!! (Bundles and exclusive items do not apply.) The discount will be taken at checkout. Third Man Records is over-the-moon with excitement to pursue and share with you the ICARUS CRAFT’s mission to spin a record further from Earth than a record has ever been spun…Plan to join us and witness history in the making! You got something better to do? ABOUT SATINS: SATINS is proud to have teamed up with Third Man Records as flight partner in making vinyl history and in flying the first vinyl record to have ever been played in space. We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks and appreciation to our flight team and project members for their amazing skill, dedication, and hard work. SATINS Flight Leader David Jankowski, Flight Engineer Paul Verhage, Senior Lab Technician John Kernkemp, ground and recovery crew: Rachel Verhage, Ethan Howard, Ted and Heather Cesler. HISTORY IS MADE AS THIRD MAN RECORDS
PLAYS THE FIRST PHONOGRAPHIC RECORD IN SPACE!
Third Man Records has officially made history in celebration of their 7th Anniversary by launching the first record played in space. The launch of the ICARUS CRAFT, a custom “space-proof” turntable attached to a high-altitude balloon, occurred on July 2nd just outside of Marsing, Idaho, spinning Third Man’s THREE MILLIONTH record pressed. The ICARUS CRAFT was designed and engineered by Kevin Carrico, longtime friend and electronics consultant for Third Man Records, and launched with the invaluable assistance of SATINS (Students and Teachers in Near Space). The goal of our mission was to send a vinyl record up as high as possible and document it being played there. Near space (our ultimate destination) is regularly visited for NASA (it closely mimics the atmosphere of Mars, so it is traveled to often for tests), but our mission was made complex by the fact that we weren’t simply flying a stationary object, but a turntable that we wanted to work – and work well! – so the endeavor became more of a professional high altitude flight than one might expect. Because of this, we had several, oft-changing government standards to meet while refining our design, selecting camera angles, and weatherproofing our craft in case of inclement weather – all while keeping the weight down and maintaining enough battery capacity to keep the record spinning in the cold air of Earth’s atmosphere. We needed low winds, a clear sky, and approval from the FAA and the FCC, all which coincided perfectly on July 2, 2016. The craft reached a peak altitude of 94,413 feet at 1:21:20 flight time (roughly 1000/feet/minute) when the balloon burst (a truly beautiful sight) and the descent began. For the entire hour and twenty minutes of ascension, the Icarus turntable faithfully played Carl Sagan’s “A Glorious Dawn” (from “Cosmos” by Symphony of Science composer John Boswell) on repeat, using an impressively sturdy phono cartridge and stylus as well as an onboard flight computer programmed with a few different actions to keep the record playing while it was safe to do so. Once the return to Earth began (with the craft attached to a parachute and falling about 4x faster than it rose), the turntable automatically went into “turbulence mode,” where the record continued to spin, but the tone arm was triggered to lift from the record surface and stay in its locked position, to protect both the needle and the record itself. When Icarus reached the ground – in a vineyard, to be exact – the record still spun, unfazed by its incredible journey. Beyond the potentially bumpy ride, Carrico’s other hurdles to jump in making this project a success had to do with just how incompatible space & vinyl records actually are! According to Carrico, “As you rise higher and higher into the thinning atmosphere, temperature and increasing vacuum (lack of air) can cause issues. Vinyl has a rather low melting point (160°F), and without air to keep things cool, you could wind-up with a lump of melted plastic on your hands if a record is exposed to the sun for too long. Without air, things in direct sunlight can get very hot while things in shade can get very cold. This constant expansion and contraction can physically distort a vinyl record rendering it unplayable. So our turntable platter also served as a heat-sink in order to keep the vinyl cool in direct sunlight.” The gold plating on the record was another measure to keep the grooves from losing their shape. From its conception to flight, this endeavor took over three years, with much of that time spent in research and development, as Carrico tested each component of the craft separately and in combination with others. Of course, Carrico was often pulled away to tend to other Third Man Records projects including rehabilitating the Recording Booth and Wax-O-Matic that reside at its Cass Corridor location. The discoveries made while working on vintage machines like these actually proved helpful in solving issues with Icarus, and vice versa, many solutions developed for Icarus were implemented in Third Man’s machines, full circle. Carrico’s #1 resource in the success of this project was his father, Dr. John P. Carrico, PhD, a physicist that worked on the Mars-Viking missions and provided endless enthusiasm for his children’s endeavors, large and small. Carrico’s brothers John, himself an astrophysicist, and Tim, who works in the aerospace analytics industry, also provided a wealth of information in making this launch a success. Third Man Records would like to offer its most sincere appreciate to the entire Carrico family. Gary Lantz of MFK Interests was another member of the team of supreme importance, acting as our thermodynamics engineer and performing many tests that made the launch go as smoothly as possible. David Jankowski of SATINS provided endless flight-support coordination, and all the members of his incredible team (including Paul Verhage, flight engineer, Rachel Verhage, tracking coordinator, and John Kernkamp, senior lab technician) were invaluable. Third Man Records would like to thank MFK Interests and SATINS, for loaning yours truly worthy personnel to this mission. About the ICARUS CRAFT launch, Third Man Records owner Jack White said, “Our main goal from inception to completion of this project was to inject imagination and inspiration into the daily discourse of music and vinyl lovers. Combining our creative impulses with those of discovery and science is our passion, and even on the scale that we are working with here, it was exhilarating to decide to do something that hasn’t been done before and to work towards its completion. And, it brings us great fulfillment to pay tribute to the incredible scientist and dreamer that Carl Sagan was. We hope that in meeting our goal we inspire others to dream big and start their own missions, whatever they may be.” Watch the launch in its entirety, archived HERE, or settle for our shorter recap video HERE, and enjoy the fruits of Third Man Records, Kevin Carrico, and the entire team’s labor. Third Man Records could not be happier to check this longtime goal off its bucket list. # # #

“LONESOME ANGEL” STREAMING NOW ON PASTE
HEADLINING TOUR THIS FALL
Under the stewardship of Sub Pop and Vagrant records, Oregon’s Blitzen Trapper is 8 studio albums deep into the a successful career as a modern folk-rock band, led by Eric Earley, dubbed by Paste as the “Tom Petty of the Northwest.” Earley’s songs read like stories you could’ve sworn you’ve heard before, and his band’s straightforward and every-so-slightly anthemic landscapes make for nearly universal likability – a real feat in these days of niche tastes and fragmented genres. Blitzen Trapper brought their (quite welcome!) Pacific Northwestern sensibilities, along with swampy and distinctly Floridian opener Lauris Vidal to wet Third Man’s collective whistle, to the Blue Room Stage on March 16, 2016. The live record that resulted, which was cut direct-to-acetate on Third Man’s 1955 Scully lathe, is available for pre-order today and officially in stores on September 2nd. The band has shared the first release from the session today on Paste who called it “lush, pining, and folky.” Album art and full tracklisting are below.
The band have also announced a headlining fall tour, “Blitzen Trapper- Songbook: A Night of Stories & Songs.” Starting in mid September, the tour will consist of all band members, but a stripped-down acoustic experience that will feature Blitzen Trapper telling stories and sharing the inspirations behind some of their most beloved songs, including those from their favorite songwriters and influences. THIRD MAN BOOKS TO RELEASE
TOTAL CHAOS: THE STORY OF THE STOOGES / AS TOLD BY IGGY POP
ON NOVEMBER 15
Third Man Books is excited to announce one of the most anticipated books of the year about one of the most influential bands of all time…The Stooges. TOTAL CHAOS: The Story of The Stooges / As Told by Iggy Pop is the first time the story of this seminal band has been told entirely in Pop’s own words.
Author Jeff Gold and contributor Johan Kugelberg, noted music historians and collectors, spent two days with Pop at his Miami home, sharing with him their extensive Stooges collection and interviewing the legendary singer. Pop’s candid, bare-all responses left them with the almost unbelievable tale of the band he founded-the alternately tragic and triumphant story of a group who rose from youth, fell prey to drugs, alcohol, and music biz realities, collapsed and nearly 30 years later reformed, recording and touring to great acclaim. In 2010 The Stooges, credited with having invented punk rock, were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Their continuing influence can be felt today in the shape and sound of rock-n-roll music.
Jeff Gold, Johan Kugelberg and editor/contributor Jon Savage are among the most respected music authors and historians working today. Their efforts include numerous acclaimed and best-selling books and a Grammy Award. TOTAL CHAOS stands as a work for all fans of the band and rock music to draw inspiration. Including an absolute treasure-trove of rare and unseen photographs, TOTAL CHAOS is a book that shows AND tells the story of The Stooges. A metallic k.o. of only the best kind.
It was a rare privilege to sit with Iggy as he downloaded the story of The Stooges. He’s an incredible storyteller with a fantastic memory and a great sense of humor, and he held nothing back. The Stooges were pioneers in sound, look, and live presentation, and along the way invented a genre-punk rock-and influenced countless others that followed. There was no precedent in rock music for what they did. They’re definitely the only group in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame who started out playing an amplified Waring blender, a vacuum cleaner, spring water bottles and a 200 gallon oil drum. – Jeff Gold, Author of 101 Essential Rock Records
The Stooges’ Fun House is to me the very definition of Detroit rock ‘n’ roll, and by proxy the definitive rock album of America. – Jack White
Those first three Stooges’ records are to me perfect rock n roll-absolutely perfect. It’s sweet enough for the girls and tough enough for the guys. It doesn’t care about you, you have to care about it. – Josh Homme
Iggy and The Stooges have to be one of the greatest American rock bands that has ever been. – Joan Jett
What does it mean to be Iggy Pop, five decades of being ‘the wildest man in rock’? Iggy Pop is many things. Rock Star. Singer, Rebel. Primitive. Stooge. The Jean Genie, Passenger. Legend. – Johnny Marr
Iggy Pop has turned the interview into an art form. In this book he tells the history of The Stooges with a mixture of wit, candor and spontaneity: from their early beginnings to their full flaming flare over three groundbreaking albums before the crash and the triumphant return that no-one could have predicted. Profusely illustrated with dozens of unseen images, this is the story of The Stooges like you’ve never read it before. – Jon Savage, Author of England’s Dreaming.

Live at Disgraceland: From Anthony Bourdain’s Parts Unknown LP
Anthony Bourdain and his team descended on Nashville hungry for culture and knowledge (as well as hot chicken, tasting plates, and tequila); they visited every nook and cranny of this town, hung with the locals, ate like czars, partied like rock stars, and woke up every morning fresh as daisies and ready to do it again. Parts Unknown does not come to your city in order to present a slide show of tourist spots and magazine cover spreads. Bourdain wants to understand what makes a city tick. He has a knack for getting down to the marrow of how a town’s denizens think and live, why they do what they do in their community, and how that relates to the country at large in this time and place, Earth 2016. This is a man after our own heart and we were so happy to welcome him into our world for a few, too-short days. Their time here culminated with a rager of a party at Disgraceland (location… unknown) where The Dead Weather, The Kills and William Tyler all played jaw dropping electric live sets, living room style, to a house full of well-fed, newly tattooed, appreciative friends. Wish you could have been there? Wish granted: we present the night’s musical entertainment in full for your listening pleasure…

THIRD MAN RECORDS TO RELEASE WOODS LIVE LP DECEMBER 9
PRE-ORDER AVAILABLE NOW
There are certain bands in this supersaturated, hyper-fragmented, temperamental internet era that rise above ephemeral popularity because they deserve it. Woods is one of those bands, and their wheelhouse is a decidedly mellow blend of “campfire folk,” psych, soul, and funk that’s wise beyond its years in timbre and lyric and takes influence from many a surprising source. Woods brings songs into the world that are at once comforting and challenging, and the band’s members take their job as music makers seriously, pumping out nine full-length studio records in the past 10 years and running their own label Woodsist out of Brooklyn.
With over ten years and nine studio records under their belt, Woods joined Third Man Records for a meditative masterclass of a live taping in their Nashville Blue Room this past May, performing to a packed house of loyal fans, happy to go on whatever journey the band had planned for them. (View photos from the show.) Frontman Jeremy Earl’s soul-quieting falsetto stylings are the center of Woods’ sound, in the studio and on this live record. But, the shamanic folk vibes of their earlier records gain an urgency and anxiety here, as they have on their newest release City Sun Eater In The River of Light, thanks to a horn section, African jazz influence, and the clear inspiration of the increasingly chaotic world in which we find ourselves living.
The journey they all took with Woods at the helm on May 2, 2016 has been immortalized now as part of Third Man Records’ Live LP series, and it’s a journey they highly recommend taking in the comfort of your own home – with a glass of your favorite beverage in hand, fire roaring, and mind malleable. Check out “Suffering Season,” an updated version of an older tune that happens to be TMR’s favorite from the 9-song set (as well as particularly poignant to the here and now) below, and pre-order the record (officially available December 9) now.

TOTAL CHAOS: THE STORY OF THE STOOGES/AS TOLD BY IGGY POP AVAILABLE NOW IN BOOKSTORES AND VIA THIRD MAN BOOKS
“The Stooges’ FUN HOUSE is to me the very definition of Detroit rock ‘n’ roll,
and by proxy the definitive rock album of America.” – Jack White
TOTAL CHAOS: The Story of The Stooges/As Told By Iggy Pop (Third Man Books) is fast proving to be one of the most acclaimed rock ‘n’ roll books of the year. The first time the story of this seminal band has been told entirely in Pop’s own words, TOTAL CHAOS has quickly drawn unanimous critical applause around the world in the weeks since its November release. TOTAL CHAOS: The Story of The Stooges/As Told By Iggy Pop is available now at bookstores and online retailers including the official Third Man Store.
Named one of Rough Trade’s “Books of the Year 2016,” and number one on Amazon for New Releases in both Punk and Lifestyle Photography categories, TOTAL CHAOS is “fantastic,” declared Esquire, “a must-read for both diehard fans and anyone who wants to learn first-hand from Pop what it was like from the inside looking out in one of the seminal bands of the post-’60s era.” Dangerous Minds had similar praise noting “TOTAL CHAOS is phenomenal… a must-have for all fans of the group.” “Remarkable,” raved MOJO, “(Pop’s) recall of specifics is extraordinary, running to his first stage dive, first arrest for public lewdness, and the first time his pants disintegrated on-stage.” “An incredible and deeply honest account,” wrote New Noise, “(Pop) pulls no punches and makes no excuses for any of his behavior or his decisions.” The “definitive Stooges book,” hailed NOISEY, “a complete oral history, plus stacks of unseen artifacts.” TOTAL CHAOS is “both definitive and unique,” applauded L.A. Weekly. “Definitive because Jeff Gold, noted rock music memorabilia collector, along with Johan Kugelberg, have gathered items such as posters, recording contracts, letters, reviews and oh so many images, both familiar and rare. Unique because they took many of these pieces to Iggy himself and had him hold forth on each one for a first-hand account of his experiences from as far back as his teenage years.” Perhaps world-renowned chef, TV personality, and best-selling author Anthony Bourdain sums it up best: “This book is everything. Definitive.”
Bursting at the seams with a treasure trove of rare and unseen images, TOTAL CHAOS both shows and tells the still amazing story of the one and only Stooges. Pop spent two days with author Jeff Gold and historian Johan Kugelberg at his Miami home, looking over their extensive memorabilia collections while sharing the legendary tale of The Stooges in typical no-holds-barred fashion. His candid recollections are unflinching and unforgettable, chronicling the band’s extraordinary highs and lows as they redefined and recreated rock ‘n’ roll in their own explosive and outlandish image. Three decades later, The Stooges returned, their volatile power undiminished on stage and on record. In 2010, the band’s anarchic sound and vision were rightfully inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, noting, “The Stooges have not only directly or indirectly influenced every punk-rock band, but they have also had an impact on the edgier groups of the grunge and indie-rock eras. You can hear echoes of the Stooges’ dissonance and attitude in everything from Sonic Youth to Nirvana. In short, they’ve helped insure that a large corner of the rock world remains energized, unkempt and off-limits to sellout.”
In addition to Kugelberg, TOTAL CHAOS sees Gold joined by a number of high profile collaborators, including editor/contributor Jon Savage. Also contributing are an array of Iggy’s famous friends and fans including Jack White, Ben Blackwell, Dave Grohl, Josh Homme, Joan Jett, Johnny Marr, and many others.
Pop and Gold celebrated TOTAL CHAOS for a series of in-store appearances, including a book launch and conversation at New York City’s famed Rizzoli Bookstore. The event received wide-ranging national coverage, including a major news feature in Rolling Stone.
Later this month Third Man will unveil an extremely Limited Edition of TOTAL CHAOS, signed by Iggy Pop and also including an exclusive 7” of his pre-Stooges group, The Prime Movers, as well as three classic posters. TOTAL CHAOS Limited Edition will first be offered to Third Man Records Vault Gold and Third Man Records Vault Platinum subscribers; remaining copies will then go on sale via the Third Man Store.
James Newell Osterberg Jr., known professionally as Iggy Pop, is an American singer-songwriter, musician and actor. He was the founder and vocalist of influential proto-punk band The Stooges, who reunited in 2003, and in 2010 were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Pop’s music has encompassed a number of styles over the course of his career, from garage and punk rock to forays into jazz and blues. Pop’s best known songs include “Lust for Life,” “The Passenger,” “Real Wild Child (Wild One),” “China Girl,” “Nightclubbing,” and the Stooges classics “Search and Destroy” and “I Wanna Be Your Dog.” In March 2016, Pop released his highest charting album ever, POST POP DEPRESSION, a collaboration with Josh Homme (Queens of the Stone Age, Eagles of Death Metal).
Jeff Gold is a music historian, author, former record label executive, and GRAMMY® Award winner. He has been profiled by Rolling Stone as one of the five “top collectors of high-end music memorabilia.” As Executive Vice President/General Manager of Warner Bros. Records and a VP at A&M Records, Gold worked with Iggy Pop, Prince, R.E.M., The Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Police, and Cat Stevens. A four-time GRAMMY® Award- nominated Art Director, he won the 1990 “Best Album Package” GRAMMY® for Suzanne Vega’s DAYS OF OPEN HAND. Gold has consulted for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and the Experience Music Project, and appeared as an expert on PBS’ HISTORY DETECTIVES. Gold and colleague Laura Woolley also appraised The Bob Dylan Archive, now housed at the University of Tulsa. His discovery of previously undocumented tapes has led to major label releases including Bob Dylan in Concert at Brandeis University 1963. Gold’s 2012 book 101 ESSENTIAL ROCK RECORDS: THE GOLDEN AGE OF VINYL, FROM THE BEATLES TO THE SEX PISTOLS was one of eight books chosen by Rolling Stone as “the year’s best reading material.” The owner of popular music collectibles website Record Mecca, Gold writes about topics of interest to collectors on its blog.
Founded by Jack White in 2001, Third Man Records continues to build an extraordinary roster of diverse musicians, bands, and songwriters, with recent highlights including MIDWEST FARMER’S DAUGHTER, the acclaimed 2016 debut album from Nashville singer-songwriter Margo Price. Third Man Books was inaugurated in 2014 with a mandate to further explore the music of language by publishing books ranging from contemporary poetry and literary fiction to biography, music and photography books, and even poetry chapbooks.

“THREE DOLLAR HAT” B/W
Featuring audio expertly mixed by Grammy Award-winner Vance Powell, the immersive concert film The Dead Weather: Live at the Mayan directed by Vern Moen is revelatory. The band’s signature gems like “Hang You From the Heavens” and “Treat Me Like Your Mother” sit pretty with explosive non-album B-sides like “You Just Can’t Win” (originally by Them) and “A Child of a Few Hours is Burning to Death” (originally by the West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band). The companion audio of Live at the Mayan marks the first-ever live LP from The Dead Weather’s first year and serves as a blistering reminder as to why this band still matters. Your stereo will thank you… your neighbors, maybe not so much.
Coupled with the LP/DVD of the Mayan performance is the final 7″ 45rpm installment from the Dodge and Burnalbum. As folks should remember, every song from the band’s acclaimed 2015 album was exclusively released on 7″ format via the Vault. “Three Dollar Hat” b/w “Lose the Right” on beautiful black and yellow vinyl is the final piece of the puzzle. As a special treat, subscribers for Vault Package #32 will receive a deluxe box to house ALL six singles from Dodge and Burn Vault releases.

And last, but certainly not least, we’ve combined our love of music and books yet again and are eager to debut the result. Nigh on ten years ago, the White Stripes unveiled the most ambitious record of their career. Taking its name from the mis-appropriation of the British exhortation “Ecky thump,” the Stripes’ Icky Thump would prove to be the final full-length studio album from the beloved Detroit duo. To celebrate not only the ten years since Icky Thump‘s release, but also twenty years since Jack and Meg started the White Stripes AND the 500th release in the Third Man Records‘ catalog, the label is delighted to announce the release of its 33rd Vault package, Icky Thump X.Deluxe Icky Thump 180-gram, colored vinylThe cornerstone of the package is the deluxe, “contained explosion” colored vinyl repressing of Icky Thump. Previously only ever available on boring black vinyl, this double LP, 180-gram vinyl dream is housed in a glorious tip-on sleeve with slightly modified artwork and sealed with a Victorian update on the original red/white sticker that was begrudgingly slit open by fidgety record collectors overly concerned with “condition.” Remastered from the original 1″ analog tapes in Nashville, TN, Icky Thump will be the first-ever Vault title manufactured at Third Man Pressing in Detroit. You will not believe your ears.Track List: Icky Thump/ You Don’t Know What Love Is (You Just Do As You’re Told)/ 300 MPH Torrential Outpour Blues/ Conquest/ Bone Broke/ Prickly Thorn, But Sweetly Worn/ St. Andrew (This Battle Is In The Air)/ Little Cream Soda/ Rag & Bone/ I’m Slowly Turning Into You/ A Martyr For My Love For You/ Catch Hell Blues/ Effect & Cause12″ Icky Thump Extras VinylThe logical companion piece to Icky Thump is the collection compiling all nine of the non-album b-sides recorded for (and during) the release and tour cycle. Icky Thump Extras joins live covers (Hank Williams’ “Tennessee Border”), alternate versions recorded in the middle of a horse-racing track in Canada (“You Don’t Know What Love Is…”) with Beck-produced exclusives (“It’s My Fault For Being Famous”) and couples them with newly reimagined artwork from Grammy Award-winning designer Rob Jones. Consider this the first and last time any of these songs will appear on 12-inch vinyl, pressed on luminescent lunar-colored vinyl. Extras will also be manufactured at Third Man Pressing in Detroit.Track List: Tennessee Border (originally by Hank Williams)/ Baby Brother (originally by Bill Carter and the Rovin Gamblers)/ You Don’t Know What Love Is (You Just Do As You’re Told) (frat rock version)/ A Martyr For My Love For You (acoustic version)/ It’s My Fault For Being Famous/ Cash Grab Complications On The Matter/ Honey, We Can’t Afford To Look This Cheap/ Conquest (acoustic mariachi version)/ Conquista (Spanish language version)The Red DemosPrior to entering Blackbird Studios for the tracking of Icky Thump, the White Stripes did a full run-through of the tracks in demo form to workshop ideas and get thoughts on tape at their Nashville rehearsal spot. This would prove to be the ONLY time the band would ever demo an album before recording. Forgotten by all involved in the intervening ten years, The Red Demos is startling insight into the germination of the songs that would soon be blasted out arenas and festivals the world over. Of particular interest is the first ever release of the instrumental “Monkeys Have It Easy”, a title previously teased via the original Icky Thump press release in 2007. Cover art depicts a working mock up of the unedited image used on the original album and exists as the ideal compliment to both that original issue and the mono mix of Icky Thump from Vault Package #1. The Red Demos will also be pressed at Third Man Pressing in Detroit.Track List: You Don’t Know What Love Is (You Just Do As You’re Told)/ A Martyr For My Love For You/ Rag and Bone/ Catch Hell Blues/ Little Cream Soda/ Prickly Thorn, But Sweetly Worn/ Monkeys Have It Easy (previously unreleased)/ Bone Broke/ Icky Thump/ Conquest/ 300 MPH Torrential Outpour BluesExclusive Polaroid Photo BookTo further push this package into “I Cannot Believe They Did That Territory” is an exclusive book comprising of Polaroid photos, tracking notes and insight from Icky Thump session photographer and White Stripes’ confidante David Swanson. Comprised 100% of previously unseen and unshared material, the of-the-moment documentation of the album and its recording process by Swanson’s intuitive and discerning eye is revelatory.Mystery Art Prints by Rob JonesTo even further blow this thing out of the water is one of nine different 8×10 White Stripes images by Rob Jones. Randomly inserted so you have no idea which one you’ll get, these include classic updates on art and graphics from the original release era in addition to completely new ideas, all rendered in the highest quality silkscreen printing and suitable for immediate framing or burning.“Rag and Bone” Enamel Pin SetNot enough? Ok, take TWO enamel pins that when combined depict the horse skeleton imagery originally featured on the 7-inch artwork for “Rag and Bone” and understand full well that the addition of said pins will elevate any drab old potato sack to a best-dressed list ensemble.Cross of St. Andrew Soft Touch BoxAll of these components will be lovingly housed in a soft-touch coated telescoping box that reproduces the cross of St. Andrew used as an important graphic in Icky Thump’s issue ten years ago and rendered even more poignant now as the specific version of that cross (the Cross of Burgundy) forms the shape of an X.Subscriptions are now open for Vault 33. Vault 32 is shipping now.
