In October of 2015 we invited Nashville purveyors of deliberate ambience, Coupler, to record with a full orchestra of nine friends and musicians, and it turned out to be a very special piece exploring the nether-regions where the organic collides with the electronic. It was 20+ minutes of of captivating and unhurried techno played on both electronic and acoustic instruments that sounded bucolic and propulsive with a deft momentum. However, this wasn’t our typical TMR show. We kept it a relatively intimate affair, with the stage in the center of the room, and only sold a handful of tickets to those interested in seeing a recording process become a performance, making this our first installment in The Blue Room Sessions series.
If you’re new to the magic of Coupler, you can think of them as an “organization” rather than a band. Ryan Norris’ objectives go beyond leading a band – he aims to use Coupler as a vehicle for writing, photography, installation art, film-scoring, etc, and above all this, he aims to collaborate with the creative people around him that inspire him. In the case of this particular performance, the organization core live members, Rodrigo Avendaño, Rollum Haas and Norris, plus a group of auxiliary players: Adam Bednarik, Mark Bond, Matt Glassmeyer, Mia Krout and Ben Marcantel. The icing on the cake was Kelli Shay Hix and her light installation. The performance was tackled from an oblique angle, using group improvisation to reinvent the trajectory as they played. The end result? The birth of a new series, and one of our favorite musical creations to which the Blue Room has ever played host. Essential Tremors is something of an anomaly in a city steeped in twang, bathed in sunshine and besieged with hootenannies. Code Knr, Miller, Read Only Memory, Tan, and Eerie Neighbor make up the group voted most likely to trigger a cold sweat, and we love them for it. In the past year, the band has made the charge away from guitar music with a quiet strategy of sporadic shows of crawly, four-track downer violence. During this metamorphosis, the band cut tracks with former Terrible Two and current Serration Pulse synth-lord and tone-boss Daniel Tomczak, crafting a crisp record that is globally exasperated and groovy against all odds: a nosedive into a cesspool of circuit-bent pollution with all the precision intact, notoriously tense, rife with white-knuckle paranoia and fog. Throw in well-placed pangs of electroclash, swirling synth, waterlogged bass lines, and dark-sided shit, and you have an important reminder that good times are not forever, which we are honored to bring to your turntable. LIVE AT THIRD MAN RECORDS
Recorded on July 18th, 2014 as the opening set for Peter Walker’s psychedelic guitar experience, William Tyler’s Live at Third Man Records LP was buried for far too long in our backlog of masters. To release it too soon would have been to unleash the secrets of the transcendent and acclaimed new record Modern Country (Merge, 2016) before they had a chance to manifest. To wait any longer would have been torture for us. Originally planned to be a live single, the full, 5-song performance was too truthy, too seamless, and too perfectly whole to be whittled down to two tracks. So, surprise! A live LP is born. For those unfamiliar with William Tyler, his story is Nashville legend… born into a songwriting family, Tyler was tapped by Kurt Wagner to become a member of Lambchop at age 19 (two decades younger than the other members), and quickly became the “architect of the band’s sound.” From there, Tyler went on to back up the Silver Jews, Bonnie “Prince” Billy, Charlie Louvin, and others… all the while writing songs for his configuration of choice: fingerpicking solo guitar. The acoustic simplicity of his first two albums remains in his most recent effort (which he describes as “a love letter to what we’re losing in America. To what we’ve already lost”), and on this live LP, but Tyler is bringing more depth and more experimentation to his compositions of late. “Gone Clear” (known as “Going Clear” at the time of our recording) which appears on both records, is a melting pot of ideas: a drone reminiscent of Hindustani classical music, a central melody that sounds distinctly Appalachian, a devolution into a kaleidoscope of colors and ideas that it’s hard to believe is being produced by a single musician. This layering of textures is Tyler’s trademark, and even more awe-inspiring live. We like to think that with the purposeful lack of smart phones, bars to saddle up to, and, of course, corners, concert-goers in the Blue Room tend to be more in-the-moment than in most performance venues. But it’s a rare artist who can take the already focused atmosphere in the room and quiet every last busy mind – Tyler did just that. This immortalization of the performance in all its transmundane glory will entrance you from first note.

Third Man recording group Wolf Eyes have unleashed a brilliantly barmy new music video for “T.O.D.D.” featured on the venerable band’s acclaimed 2015 label debut, I AM A PROBLEM: MIND IN PIECES. The video is streaming now at the official Third Man YouTube channel. “T.O.D.D.” is directed by Paris-based artist/filmmaker Will Benedict, in collaboration with Copenhagen-based artist Steffen Jørgensen. The music video – in which an alien discusses issues surrounding assimilation in an extra global context while drawing parallels with Europe’s current migrant crisis with television talk show host Charlie Rose – will be included at the 9th Berlin Biennale for Contemporary Art, curated by New York-based collective DIS and continuing through the summer. Founded two decades ago in Ann Arbor, Wolf Eyes recently headlined the first (and last) Trip Metal Fest, a remarkable Detroit gathering of experimental artists, noise rockers, and sonic improvisers. The three-day event received widespread national coverage, including a major feature in the New York Times. On July 30 , in celebration of their 7 th anniversary, Third Man Records will reveal their attempt to play the first phonographic record in space – a gold-plated 12″ master of Carl Sagan’s “A Glorious Dawn” (a moving arrangement of Sagan’s sagacious words culled from his magnificent Cosmos series, previously pressed and distributed as a 7″ in their first year of operation, 2009). This record marks the label’s 3 MILLIONTH RECORD PRESSED! The vessel tasked with the mission – The ICARUS CRAFT – is a custom-built “space-proof” turntable attached to a high-altitude balloon designed by Kevin Carrico, who has NASA in his blood, and is responsible for assisting in the restoration of many of Third Man’s machines (Third Man Recording Booth) to working order. Kevin and the Third Man team are aided in their endeavor by SATINS* (Students and Teachers in Near Space). HISTORY IS MADE AS THIRD MAN RECORDS
PLAYS THE FIRST PHONOGRAPHIC RECORD IN SPACE!
Third Man Records has officially made history in celebration of their 7th Anniversary by launching the first record played in space. The launch of the ICARUS CRAFT, a custom “space-proof” turntable attached to a high-altitude balloon, occurred on July 2nd just outside of Marsing, Idaho, spinning Third Man’s THREE MILLIONTH record pressed. The ICARUS CRAFT was designed and engineered by Kevin Carrico, longtime friend and electronics consultant for Third Man Records, and launched with the invaluable assistance of SATINS (Students and Teachers in Near Space). The goal of our mission was to send a vinyl record up as high as possible and document it being played there. Near space (our ultimate destination) is regularly visited for NASA (it closely mimics the atmosphere of Mars, so it is traveled to often for tests), but our mission was made complex by the fact that we weren’t simply flying a stationary object, but a turntable that we wanted to work – and work well! – so the endeavor became more of a professional high altitude flight than one might expect. Because of this, we had several, oft-changing government standards to meet while refining our design, selecting camera angles, and weatherproofing our craft in case of inclement weather – all while keeping the weight down and maintaining enough battery capacity to keep the record spinning in the cold air of Earth’s atmosphere. We needed low winds, a clear sky, and approval from the FAA and the FCC, all which coincided perfectly on July 2, 2016. The craft reached a peak altitude of 94,413 feet at 1:21:20 flight time (roughly 1000/feet/minute) when the balloon burst (a truly beautiful sight) and the descent began. For the entire hour and twenty minutes of ascension, the Icarus turntable faithfully played Carl Sagan’s “A Glorious Dawn” (from “Cosmos” by Symphony of Science composer John Boswell) on repeat, using an impressively sturdy phono cartridge and stylus as well as an onboard flight computer programmed with a few different actions to keep the record playing while it was safe to do so. Once the return to Earth began (with the craft attached to a parachute and falling about 4x faster than it rose), the turntable automatically went into “turbulence mode,” where the record continued to spin, but the tone arm was triggered to lift from the record surface and stay in its locked position, to protect both the needle and the record itself. When Icarus reached the ground – in a vineyard, to be exact – the record still spun, unfazed by its incredible journey. Beyond the potentially bumpy ride, Carrico’s other hurdles to jump in making this project a success had to do with just how incompatible space & vinyl records actually are! According to Carrico, “As you rise higher and higher into the thinning atmosphere, temperature and increasing vacuum (lack of air) can cause issues. Vinyl has a rather low melting point (160°F), and without air to keep things cool, you could wind-up with a lump of melted plastic on your hands if a record is exposed to the sun for too long. Without air, things in direct sunlight can get very hot while things in shade can get very cold. This constant expansion and contraction can physically distort a vinyl record rendering it unplayable. So our turntable platter also served as a heat-sink in order to keep the vinyl cool in direct sunlight.” The gold plating on the record was another measure to keep the grooves from losing their shape. From its conception to flight, this endeavor took over three years, with much of that time spent in research and development, as Carrico tested each component of the craft separately and in combination with others. Of course, Carrico was often pulled away to tend to other Third Man Records projects including rehabilitating the Recording Booth and Wax-O-Matic that reside at its Cass Corridor location. The discoveries made while working on vintage machines like these actually proved helpful in solving issues with Icarus, and vice versa, many solutions developed for Icarus were implemented in Third Man’s machines, full circle. Carrico’s #1 resource in the success of this project was his father, Dr. John P. Carrico, PhD, a physicist that worked on the Mars-Viking missions and provided endless enthusiasm for his children’s endeavors, large and small. Carrico’s brothers John, himself an astrophysicist, and Tim, who works in the aerospace analytics industry, also provided a wealth of information in making this launch a success. Third Man Records would like to offer its most sincere appreciate to the entire Carrico family. Gary Lantz of MFK Interests was another member of the team of supreme importance, acting as our thermodynamics engineer and performing many tests that made the launch go as smoothly as possible. David Jankowski of SATINS provided endless flight-support coordination, and all the members of his incredible team (including Paul Verhage, flight engineer, Rachel Verhage, tracking coordinator, and John Kernkamp, senior lab technician) were invaluable. Third Man Records would like to thank MFK Interests and SATINS, for loaning yours truly worthy personnel to this mission. About the ICARUS CRAFT launch, Third Man Records owner Jack White said, “Our main goal from inception to completion of this project was to inject imagination and inspiration into the daily discourse of music and vinyl lovers. And, it brings us great fulfillment to pay tribute to the incredible scientist and dreamer that Carl Sagan was. Under the stewardship of Sub Pop and Vagrant records, Oregon’s Blitzen Trapper is 8 studio albums deep into the a successful career as a modern folk-rock band, led by Eric Earley, dubbed by Paste as the “Tom Petty of the Northwest.” Earley’s songs read like stories you could’ve sworn you’ve heard before, and his band’s straightforward and every-so-slightly anthemic landscapes make for nearly universal likability – a real feat in these days of niche tastes and fragmented genres. Blitzen Trapper brought their (quite welcome!) Pacific Northwestern sensibilities, along with swampy and distinctly Floridian opener Lauris Vidal to wet Third Man’s collective whistle, to the Blue Room Stage on March 16, 2016. The live record that resulted, which was cut direct-to-acetate on Third Man’s 1955 Scully lathe, is available for pre-order today and officially in stores on September 2nd. The band has shared the first release from the session today on Paste who called it “lush, pining, and folky.” Album art and full tracklisting are below.
The band have also announced a headlining fall tour, “Blitzen Trapper- Songbook: A Night of Stories & Songs.” Starting in mid September, the tour will consist of all band members, but a stripped-down acoustic experience that will feature Blitzen Trapper telling stories and sharing the inspirations behind some of their most beloved songs, including those from their favorite songwriters and influences. It was a rare privilege to sit with Iggy as he downloaded the story of The Stooges. He’s an incredible storyteller with a fantastic memory and a great sense of humor, and he held nothing back. The Stooges were pioneers in sound, look, and live presentation, and along the way invented a genre-punk rock-and influenced countless others that followed. There was no precedent in rock music for what they did. Live at Disgraceland: From Anthony Bourdain’s Parts Unknown LP
Anthony Bourdain and his team descended on Nashville hungry for culture and knowledge (as well as hot chicken, tasting plates, and tequila); they visited every nook and cranny of this town, hung with the locals, ate like czars, partied like rock stars, and woke up every morning fresh as daisies and ready to do it again. Parts Unknown does not come to your city in order to present a slide show of tourist spots and magazine cover spreads. Bourdain wants to understand what makes a city tick. He has a knack for getting down to the marrow of how a town’s denizens think and live, why they do what they do in their community, and how that relates to the country at large in this time and place, Earth 2016. This is a man after our own heart and we were so happy to welcome him into our world for a few, too-short days. There are certain bands in this supersaturated, hyper-fragmented, temperamental internet era that rise above ephemeral popularity because they deserve it. Woods is one of those bands, and their wheelhouse is a decidedly mellow blend of “campfire folk,” psych, soul, and funk that’s wise beyond its years in timbre and lyric and takes influence from many a surprising source. Woods brings songs into the world that are at once comforting and challenging, and the band’s members take their job as music makers seriously, pumping out nine full-length studio records in the past 10 years and running their own label Woodsist out of Brooklyn.
With over ten years and nine studio records under their belt, Woods joined Third Man Records for a meditative masterclass of a live taping in their Nashville Blue Room this past May, performing to a packed house of loyal fans, happy to go on whatever journey the band had planned for them. (View photos from the show.) Frontman Jeremy Earl’s soul-quieting falsetto stylings are the center of Woods’ sound, in the studio and on this live record. But, the shamanic folk vibes of their earlier records gain an urgency and anxiety here, as they have on their newest release City Sun Eater In The River of Light, thanks to a horn section, African jazz influence, and the clear inspiration of the increasingly chaotic world in which we find ourselves living.
The journey they all took with Woods at the helm on May 2, 2016 has been immortalized now as part of Third Man Records’ Live LP series, and it’s a journey they highly recommend taking in the comfort of your own home – with a glass of your favorite beverage in hand, fire roaring, and mind malleable. James Newell Osterberg Jr., known professionally as Iggy Pop, is an American singer-songwriter, musician and actor. He was the founder and vocalist of influential proto-punk band The Stooges, who reunited in 2003, and in 2010 were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Pop’s music has encompassed a number of styles over the course of his career, from garage and punk rock to forays into jazz and blues. Pop’s best known songs include “Lust for Life,” “The Passenger,” “Real Wild Child (Wild One),” “China Girl,” “Nightclubbing,” and the Stooges classics “Search and Destroy” and “I Wanna Be Your Dog.” In March 2016, Pop released his highest charting album ever, POST POP DEPRESSION, a collaboration with Josh Homme (Queens of the Stone Age, Eagles of Death Metal).
Jeff Gold is a music historian, author, former record label executive, and GRAMMY® Award winner. He has been profiled by Rolling Stone as one of the five “top collectors of high-end music memorabilia.” As Executive Vice President/General Manager of Warner Bros. Records and a VP at A&M Records, Gold worked with Iggy Pop, Prince, R.E.M., The Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Police, and Cat Stevens. A four-time GRAMMY® Award- nominated Art Director, he won the 1990 “Best Album Package” GRAMMY® for Suzanne Vega’s DAYS OF OPEN HAND.
