THE INDIE ROCK COLORING BOOK
Yellow Bird Project (YBP), a Montreal-based non-profit organization, and illustrator Andy J. Miller – the team behind The Indie Rock Coloring Book, which won accolades from such publications as Time, Time Out, Marie Claire, Uncut and SPIN – have found another innovative way to celebrate indie rock while benefiting charities chosen by the musicians who create it. The Indie Rock Poster Book, which will be published May 7th by Chronicle Books, is an oversized volume containing 30 different full color posters inspired by such all-time favorite indie rock songs as Bon Iver’s “Skinny Love,” Devendra Banhart’s “A Sight To Behold,” Iron & Wine’s “The Trapeze Swinger” and many more. The Indie Rock Poster Bookwill be available at www.yellowbirdproject.com and at select retailers worldwide.
YBP’s Matthew Stotland and Casey Cohen assembled a list of seminal indie rock songs and, underMiller’s art direction, selected 30 cutting edge illustrators from around the world to contribute. Each was instructed to choose a song with personal resonance and render it in their own interpretative way. (See below for a full list of illustrators.)
The result is a vibrant collection of art that can be enjoyed as a book or as individual pieces of art – each print is removable and suitable for framing. The 11” x 14” posters are printed on high quality cardstock and the reverse side of each includes a commentary regarding the illustrator’s artistic process and insight into what inspired them to create their piece. Proceeds from The Indie Rock Poster Book will benefit charities selected by the musicians whose songs inspired the collection.
Stotland and Cohen launched Yellow Bird Project (YBP) in the summer of 2006. Fresh out of college and eager to make a difference, they set out to bring about a new world order of indie philanthropy. The pair asked some of their favorite indie bands to contribute original pieces of artwork, which were then printed onto t-shirts that were sold to raise money for charities chosen by the bands. In 2009, YBPcollaborated with Miller to introduce another creative outlet for art, music and charity, The Indie Rock Coloring Book. Its success primed the trio to tackle an even more elaborate project – this time in full color. And so The Indie Rock Poster Book was born.
