Sleep Habits

BIOGRAPHY

Growing up in Louisiana, Alan Howard has become one with his New Orleans-based project Sleep Habits. Having started to write and record music on a hand-me-down korg D1600mkII, the music that has since come out of Sleep Habits HQ is a moment of clarity in a constantly moving world. Having shifted and developed sounds that have grown with him, Howard has always been focused on creating a sense of place, both timeless and interchangeable as his universal stories have unfolded over driven soundscapes, slowcore intimacies and alt-country daydreams.

Having collaborated with beloved indie artists such as Mariah Houston (Trinkets and Horses), Wesley Wollfe (Bedridden), Noa Jamir, Quinn Pilgrim and hemlock, the latter who has had an appearance on every Sleep Habits project, community has become not just a point of relation, but Howard’s knack for collaboration and comradery is what defines the importance of making music in his own world. Although writing music is primarily a solo endeavor, recording has become an invitation for friends of Sleep Habits which has always been open to whatever sound or energy others bring to the song.

Mourning Doves, the new EP from Sleep Habits, is a play on the open spaces that surround Howard as he lives out his day-to-day. Putting more focus on experimenting with new recording techniques, each track brings an immediacy to the universal stories being told.

Mourning Doves is a collection of older songs kept in his back pocket as life changed around him, allowing the time to define what these open spaces are to him and the possibilities of what they can be filled with.
